Here are some things you need to remember before you go abroad:
1. Call your UK mobile network service provider to make sure your PAYG mobile phone is enabled for international roaming. You should do this in good time as it can take up to two weeks and you can’t do it while you are abroad or overseas.
2. Ensure that your existing handset will work in the country you are travelling to - this is not always the case, particularly outside Europe. A tri-band or quad phone will usually work in most countries. Look at your phone’s features just to make sure.
3. Call your UK network provider and find out how much it costs for international roaming services. Charges can be very different to calls in the UK (and confirm the current charges just before you leave as they can change at short notice). In the past many networks have been charging customers as much as 80p a minute to receive calls while they are abroad.
Finanlly make sure you have enough credit on your phone before you leave. Depending on where you are going, you may find it extremely difficult to top up your phone.
